DOHA • The only Qur'an-enabled TV in the world is now available in the Middle East, electronics giant LG Electronics announced recently. LG's latest Time Machine plasma TV allows viewers to read the Qur'an, search and bookmark passages and listen to scriptures — all on the TV screen.

(14 cm) Gift of Alexander Smith Cochran, 1913 (13.228.1) This two-part Qur’an, both volumes of which are in the Museum's collection, is a splendid example of lavish manuscript production in the early Timurid period. Every page of this Qur’an, finished in June 1427, has profusely decorated margins of floral scrolls in gold and color. Its calligrapher was the ruler of Shiraz himself, Ibrahim Sultan (1394–1435), a grandson of Timur (Tamerlane) and an accomplished artist and great collector of books. Known to be observant in matters of religion, Ibrahim Sultan personally scribed pious inscriptions on two madrasas he founded in Shiraz and at least five copies of the Qur’an. To see Iran photos in order, please view a href= http://www.flickr.com/photos/birdfarm/sets/72157600268901087/ Iran set! /a After proceeding across the beautifully changing landscape -- from the stunning deserts of Yazd to the irrigated lushness of Pars -- we came just before nightfall to Shirāz, a jewel of a city about which poets have been singing for millennia. i (The long ā is pronounced like quot;ahh, quot; drawn out lovingly... so the āz in Shirāz is not quite Oz as in Wizard of Oz, but almost... Shirahhhhz... the same with the ā in Qur'ān and Irān, for that matter... such a beautiful language!) /i After curving along the Kor River for many miles, the road wound up into the hills we had seen around us all afternoon. We came to the Allahu Akbar pass, a steep but apparently natural cut in the mountains, wherein stands the beautiful Qur'ān Gate. The gate is so named because it once housed very special copies of the holy book (now in the city's museum), and travellers arriving or departing through the gate were said to receive a blessing from passing under these tomes. The pass is so named because it is said that any traveller who arrived at the pass would, on glimpsing the city below, be so stunned at its beauty that s/he would inevitably cry out, quot;God is great! quot; ( quot;Allahu Akbar! quot;) Indeed, the view of the city was lovely, though my pictures do not capture it (light posts etc. are in the way!). We dallied around at this gate until the evening sun bathed the city in saffron then vermilion hues, and then it was positively breathtaking. So too was the knowledge of the romantic past, the centuries of travelers who had passed that way... It is a popular spot for a popular Iranian activity... hanging out. ( quot;Work hard, play hard quot; could be this country's motto!) In this photo you can see all the people sitting around near the gate below. This is why we spent so much time here... at every stop on our trip, people wanted to speak with us and we wanted to talk with them, so our poor guide had a terrible time trying to drag us away from any spot where Iranians were congregated... Tom Deatherage at the Late Show has a knack for spotting new talent. The gallery’s October exhibition includes intriguing fabricated steel works by Asheer Akram, a 2007 graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute.

(97.2 cm) Anonymous Gift, 1972 (1972.279) This copy of the Qur'an, calligraphed in an elegant muhaqqaq style, was probably the largest ever produced. The two lines of script, each over a meter long, are from sura LX:21–22 ( of the Believer ). Originally, each page included seven lines of script. A double-page would fit perfectly into the gigantic Qur'an stand in stone erected for the mosque of Bibi Khanum in Samarqand, commissioned by Ulugh Beg (1394–1449), the grandson of Timur, after Timur's death. Its calligrapher was probably the renowned cUmar Aqtac: some sources tell us that he had tried to astonish Timur by writing a Qur’an so small that it could fit under a signet ring, but, when the sultan was unmoved, cUmar wrote a Qur’an so large that it had to be brought to Timur on a cart!
